Dhiren Solanki has quite a thriving business selling donkey milk in Gujarat's Patan district. He reportedly started with 20 donkeys and a Rs 22 lakh investment, and the rest, as they say, is history. Here's how he did it.
Today with 42 donkeys on his farm, Solanki has seen a growing demand for the product.
At this farm, donkey milk sells at 70 times the price of milk--Rs 5,000 a litre--produced by other bovines.?According to his website, tdsdonkeyfarm.in, the online company's annual turnover is between Rs. 0.5 crore to 2.5 crore approximately.?
Solanki told media that he had been looking for a government job but having had no luck, an idea came to him. "I found some private jobs, but the pay would barely cover my family expenses. Around this time, I came to know about donkey rearing in south India. I met some people and set up this farm in my village about eight months back [ago]."
According to various reports, he earned next to nothing in the first five months. He then turned his sights to south India where there is demand for donkey milk. Today, he not only supplies in the states of Kerala and Karnataka, but he also has cosmetics companies as his clients who use donkey milk in their products.
Solanki shared how cow milk sells for Rs 65 a litre, donkey milk fetches him anywhere between Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000. He claims the milk he supplies is always fresh since it is refrigerated. Not only that, he also supplies donkey milk in powdered form.?
So far, he has invested Rs 38 lakh in his business and while there's no demand for donkey milk in Gujarat, Solanki seems to be doing just fine. Here's wishing him the best.?
