The mother of 2012 Delhi gang rape victim Nirbhaya has voiced her anguish over the Gujarat government's recent release of the eleven rapists connected with Bilkis Bano.
Asha Devi, Nirbhaya's mother, stated during a debate on the India Today channel,?"Blood boils when I see rapists being accorded a warm welcome."
"Everything that has been happening is absolutely wrong and shameful. Such attitudes of some people towards rapists is the reason women are being raped."
Speaking about putting rapists behind bars for their whole lives, Asha Devi added,
"I think that rape convicts should never be released. If they were sentenced to life imprisonment, they should be put behind bars for their whole life. Because this is not related to a case or a family. This is related to the security of all women. If the criminals involved in such crimes are released, it sends out the wrong message in the society."
She added, "Parents and families are apprehensive about sending their women out in the world. This is why these killers and rapists shouldn't be released."
Devi urged the Gujarat government to reconsider its ruling, saying that how the rape and murder criminals were welcomed with treats and garlands was not only a mockery of the victim Bilkis but of all rape victims.
She called the garlanding of convicts "extremely unfortunate".?
"Those with rape mentality have drawn a wrong message from this release. If we say in clear words, you have supported rapists," she said.
In a separate interview with Mojo Story, Asha Devi reacted to the horrific statements of BJP MLA CK Raulji that those convicts were Brahmins with good sanskaar.?
"Is it written in our constitution that you will be released if you are a Brahmin and Pundit even after committing rape? This is extremely wrong," she said, pointing out that "you will be punished whoever you are. "
Devi felt terrible after learning about the convicts' release. She urged the family of the Bilkis to file an appeal with the Supreme Court against the remission.
"This release is not in the interest of society," she asserted.
The eleven released individuals were found guilty of killing her 3-year-old daughter and seven other family members during the Gujarat riots in 2002. They were also found guilty of gang-raping Bilkis Bano.
