An original edition of Action Comics No. 1, containing Superman's historic introduction, was auctioned for a record-breaking $6 million (about Rs 49 crore).?
The comic, written by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, follows Man of Steel's origins as a Kryptonian kid transported to Earth, as well as the introduction of his love interest, Lois Lane.
The recent auction outperformed the $5.3 million (about Rs 44 crore) sale of Superman No. 1 in 2022, while Spider-Man's debut comic went for $3.6 million (approximately Rs 29 crore) in 2021.?
Meanwhile, the recently sold copy was rare, with only 78 copies monitored by CGC, a comic book grading organization.
The copy was evaluated 8.5 out of 10, indicating that it was in great condition considering its age. Previously, a very worn version evaluated at only 0.5 sold for $408,000 in September.
In an interview with Barron's, Heritage Auctions' vice president, Barry Sandoval, stated, "Thursday was a historic day for a historic comic book, and we expected nothing less. The first session of this four-day extravaganza will cost more than $15 million, and we haven't even touched on the comic art, which begins on Friday, with several significant pieces to come. Perhaps there is more history to be made."
More superhero team comics made news throughout the auction. Two copies of Justice League of America, both graded 9.6, sold for an astonishing $348,000 (roughly Rs 2 crore apiece).?
However, it was a spectacular 9.6 graded copy of Wonder Woman's second appearance that stole the show, fetching $420,000 (about Rs 3 crore).?
