The world's greatest athletes are arriving in Paris ahead of Friday's Opening Ceremony, and they're adjusting to new sleeping arrangements. It's not exactly glamorous, but most people are discovering that cardboard beds aren't so bad after all.?
As part of attempts to make the 2024 Paris Olympics the "most responsible and sustainable Games in history," the Olympic Village is filled with cardboard beds for athletes built entirely of recyclable materials.
British diver Tom Daley released a video assessment of the beds with his 3.2 million Instagram followers. In the 30-second video, Daley knocks on the cardboard to demonstrate its strength before jumping up and down on his Paris 2024 blanket without issue.
Irish rugby players Jordan Conroy and Harry McNulty demonstrated how solid the cardboard beds are in a humorous Instagram video. McNulty opens the video by stating that the mattresses will "supposedly" collapse if more than one person is on them.
Then, Conroy dives onto the bed, falls off, and jumps back on.
Tilly Kearns, an Australian athlete, had a contrasting experience on her first night in Paris. The water polo star stated that the mattress was "actually rock solid," even on the side that was meant to be softer.?
On Tuesday, she tweeted an update saying her team manager had gotten mattress toppers and additional pillows for the entire Australian team.
