As the U.S. elections on November 5 approach, voters are ramping up their preparations, with early voting already underway in key states like North Carolina and Georgia. Amidst this, Indian Americans are rallying behind Kamala Harris, the half-Indian Vice President, who has a connection to India through her mother, Shyamala, a renowned biologist from India. In a show of support, they have released a Bollywood-style video to celebrate her candidacy.
On Thursday, an Indian American Democratic fundraiser unveiled a digital video aimed at rallying South Asian voters in crucial battleground states to support Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz.?
The video features a Bollywood-inspired soundtrack, using the instrumental version of A.R. Rahman's "Dil Hai Chhota Sa, Chhoti Si Asha" from the film Roja.?
A similar video supporting Kamala Harris,?inspired by Indian cinema, was released?on October 8.?
This featured the catchy tune of "Naacho Naacho" (or the Telugu original "Naatu Naatu") from the acclaimed Indian film RRR, directed by S.S. Rajamouli. This song had made history by winning the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards in 2023.??
The goal of such videos is to resonate with South Asian communities in states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Georgia, Nevada, Arizona, and North Carolina.
Ajay Bhutoria, a member of the National Finance Committee for Kamala Harris's campaign, shared on X, "Let's mobilize and turn out the South Asian vote in key battleground states."
He emphasised that "Vice President Harris represents joy and hope for our community," noting her commitment to overcoming the divisiveness associated with Donald Trump.?
"She represents hope for over 5 million Indian Americans. We are using Bollywood music to engage our community and ensure their voices are heard," Bhutoria stated.
Early voting for the US presidential elections has kicked off in several states, including North Carolina and Georgia.?
To secure victory, a candidate must garner at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes available.?
Current data from FiveThirtyEight's daily election poll tracker shows Kamala Harris leading in national polls with a 2.4-percentage-point advantage over Donald Trump.
However, the race remains competitive, and the final outcome is uncertain. FiveThirtyEight's election forecast suggests Harris has a slight edge, estimating she would win 54 out of 100 simulations, while Trump is favored in 46.?
With high stakes and narrow margins, every vote will play a pivotal role in deciding the next president of the United States.
