In a bizarre incident, thieves returned the stolen valuables, including jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh to the victim, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad.?
Though the accused had stolen the jewellery worth Rs 20 lakh, he returned the ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh only.?
The incident took place sometime during Diwali when the family had gone to their hometown on October 23. When they returned on October 27, they found their house had been burgled.?
Following this, Preeti Sirohi, the homeowner, informed the police about the burglary. Based on the complaint, a case has been against the accused under IPC sections 380 (theft) and (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) at Nandgram police station.??
The burglary was also published in the media subsequently. However, in an interesting turn of events, the victim received a courier on October 31 and was surprised to find gold ornaments which were stolen by the accused.?
Harsh, Preeti¡¯s son, said that on October 31 evening, they received a courier which mentioned the name of the sender as Rajdeep Jewellers, Sarafa Bazar, Hapur. When they opened the packet, they found a box which belonged to them. Then they opened it and found some jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh which was stolen by the thief.?
Harsh, however, said that they are yet to receive the remaining jewellery.
On scanning the footage from a CCTV camera installed at the society gate, police found a youth, in his 20s, coming out from the society gate with a school bag on his shoulder. During the investigation, police found the bag belonged to Preeti's son.
In the footage, the youth was seen coming out from the society on foot and alone.?When the police came to know about the courier packet, they checked the items. They later sent a team to Hapur for investigation, according to Anshu Jain, circle officer-2.?
The officer further said that when the police team reached Sarafa Bazar and checked the details of the shop Rajdeep Jewellers, as mentioned on the courier, they found that the shop bearing the name did not exist.??
In addition, the phone number mentioned on the packet was also fake. Police later went to the courier company and went through the CCTV footage, in which two people were seen and they are the prime suspects in the case.??
The hunt is on to trace the culprits, police said.?
