Internet is a pool full of new and unusual information. You get to learn something new almost every day. But a human being excreting milk instead of sweat is new information we wouldn't be able to digest anytime soon.?
Instagram user and owner of breastfeeding-themed clothing company The Little Milk Bar Lindsay White (@thelittlemilkbar) who is also a mother,?shared her experience with producing breast milk through her armpit after childbirth.?
In the video, White explained how she first noticed that she was lactating from her armpit. "One day I was feeding Allie and I realized her hair was soaking wet. Then I realized it was coming from my armpit. I thought I was just really sweaty, but I noticed this huge lump and thought, 'what is that?' so, I squeezed it and holy s**t, milk squirted out.??
¡°I went to the doctor, thinking maybe I had a third nipple, but she said ¡®Nope! Your milk line actually runs all the way up through your armpits.¡±
After the video got viral, Lindsay made a follow-up post saying that?while she only ever leaked from one spot with Allie, when she got pregnant with her son Koda, she leaked milk out of ¡®both sides¡¯.?
She said: ¡°Instead of having just one big lump, I had these two little things pop up that have never been there before ¨C and on the other side too.¡°So I leaked milk out of three spots on one side, and two sides on the other... I¡¯m definitely a milk maker!¡±
The reason the armpits leak milk sometimes is that the breast tissue can grow all the way up into the axilla (armpit), and just like regular breast tissue, can produce milk. Having extra breast tissue is called polymastia and a 1999 paper published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that up to six per cent of women have it.
Sometimes, it will have an extra nipple or areola but often it won't, and women may only realize they have extra tissue when they become pregnant.??
Emily Brittingham, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) has mentioned how it is completely normal for women to leak milk from armpits.?Writing for?BellyBelly.com, Brittingham explained: ¡°At six weeks gestation, when you were a tiny embryo in your mother¡¯s womb, milk lines began to develop, starting from your underarms.?These lines travelled down both sides of your torso and extended all the way to your groin.¡±
Well, whatever the reason is, it surely freaked us out.?
