R Madhavan Jokes 'Rang De Basanti' Was Exciting For Him Only For 9 Minutes, Here's Why!
R Madhavan says Rang De Basanti was only exciting for nine minutes as that was his screen time in the movie. He also said that he achieved immortality with the role. Did you know he was supposed to play Siddharth's role initially?
Even after so many years of release, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De Basanti remains relevant even today. The film awakened an entire generation and changed India forever. It taught us instead of blaming the country and government, it's time to take responsibility for bringing a change yourselves.
"Door se commentary dena bahut aasan hota hai. Doosron ko gaali dena aur bhi aasan. Agar tumhe itna problem hai toh tum badlon na iss desh ko."
After Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein, R Madhavan's most popular role that made him a national crush was Rang De Basanti. Madhavan recently quipped that the film was only exciting for nine minutes. Why would he say so?
Madhavan's role in the film might have left a deep impact on the audiences but did you realised he only had a nine-minute role. During a conversation with comedian Tanmay Bhatt, he was asked if he has seen the second half, since his character died in the first half itself. Both of them cracked up at this.
Madhavan then said, "great question. Rang De Basanti was only valid, very exciting for me for nine minutes."
R Madhavan had earlier said that the movie proved if a role was well-written, the screen timing didn't matter. He said he achieved immortality with the role. But did you know he was offered Siddharth's role first? Here's why he couldn't do it.
"In Rang De Basanti I had a nine-minute role. I was supposed to do Siddharth¡¯s role but I couldn¡¯t because I had long hair, and I ended up doing the pilot¡¯s role. Big revelation in my life, because even now when they speak about Rang De Basanti, my name is synonymous with that film, for a nine-minute appearance. And these gentlemen, who worked so hard for one-and-a-half years, and I only worked for eight days, I think. And I realised that immortality in terms of being recognised as a character depends on how you play that character, and how that character is written and presented," he had told Film Companion earlier.
Rang De Basanti was India's official entry for the Golden Globe Awards and Oscar awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
