RRR¡¯s SS Rajamouli Addresses Reports Of Supporting BJP¡¯s Agenda, ¡®People Have Had Objections¡¯

SS Rajamouli¡¯s globally popular film RRR had a feat worth taking inspiration from. The film went on to win several accolades over time and even earned a nomination at the esteemed Oscars. As the filmmaker continues to ride the stairs of success, there were also claims of him supporting a political party¡¯s agenda.

Rajamouli was asked if there was ¡°pressure being put on you, whether anti-Muslim or pro-nationalist, from BJP supporters or even the RSS.¡±

To which he replied in an interview with The New Yorker, ¡°No, never directly, never.¡± He also shared that no one had ¡°ever approached me to make an agenda film, whatever the agenda is. Sometimes Muslims have had objections, sometimes Hindus, sometimes different castes,¡± he said.

Rajamouli was also asked whether the recent rise of nationalism, as well as anti-Muslim sentiment, affected the ways of Indian filmmaking.

On which the Bahubali director shared, ¡°Films reflect the pace of society because filmmakers have to cater to audiences. If there is a rise in that kind of sentiment in society, those kinds of films will come out. But I always stay away from that. I go a completely different route.¡±

Rajamouli then recalling an incident from 2020 shared, ¡°I¡¯d also like to point out one more thing to people who accuse me of supporting the BJP or the BJP¡¯s agenda: when we first released an early character design of Bheem, I showed him wearing a Muslim skullcap [to disguise himself]. After that, a BJP leader threatened to burn down theatres showing RRR, and said he would beat me in the road if we didn¡¯t remove the cap.¡±

¡°So people can decide for themselves whether I¡¯m a BJP person or not."

Rajamouli further added, "I hate extremism, whether it is the BJP, Muslim League, or whatever. I hate extreme people in any section of society. That is the simplest explanation that I can give. I distance myself from either Hindu or pseudo-liberal propaganda. I¡¯m just catering to the emotional needs of the audience."

Rajamouli also shared the ideas that moulded Bahubali and RRR.

He shared, "First of all, everyone knows the Baahubali movies are fictional, so there is nothing for me to say about whether it is a distortion of history to portray historic characters to suit the present BJP¡¯s agenda. As for RRR, this is not a documentary. This is not a history lesson. It¡¯s a fictional take on characters, which has been done many times in the past. We also just talked about Mayabazar ¡ª if RRR is a distortion of history, Mayabazar is a distortion of the historic epic ."
