The mystery surrounding Nidhi, the 'friend' and co-passenger of Anjali Singh, who was hit by a car and then dragged for about 12 km in Delhi's Kanjhawala area, continues to deepen.
It has now emerged that Nidhi, the only eye witness in the hit-and-run case, was earlier arrested in a drug smuggling case.
Nidhi arrested for drug smuggling in 2020
IANS, quoting police sources, reported that Nidhi was intercepted at the Agra railway station for bringing drugs from Telangana, following which she was placed under arrest on December 6, 2020. Two more persons, Sameer and Ravi, were also arrested along with her.
Nidhi, who was booked under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPC) Act, is currently out on bail. Earlier, it was said that she had no previous police record.
On Friday, Nidhi was called by the police to join the ongoing investigation again, as there were contradictions in her previous version of the incident.
Anjali and Nidhi fought at party: friend
Meanwhile, another friend of the 20-year-old victim said that Anjali and Nidhi had fought over money during the party at a hotel on New Year's Eve.
Naveen, who claimed to be Anjali's friend, said both, the deceased woman and Nidhi were partying at a hotel along with a few other friends, during which there was an altercation between the two women, Nidhi and Anjali.
"Both were partying there (hotel). Some other friends were also there. A little later, they started quarrelling. Nidhi asked for her money, and Anjali asked for her keys. They then had a physical altercation," Naveen told ANI.
"We separated them. I told Anjali to calm down. Nidhi went downstairs and created a scene. The hotel staff told us about it. Anjali went downstairs to calm her down. They had a quarrel downstairs. By the time we went there, they had left on a scooty," Naveen added.
"They got into a fight. Nidhi was asking for her money while Anjali was asking for her key. We tried to resolve the fight," he added.
What Nidhi told about her friend
Nidhi had, in her initial statement, said that Anjali was heavily drunk at the time of the accident.
However, her family rejected this and said Anjali did not have a drinking habit.
The post-mortem report of Anjali also does not mention the presence of alcohol in her body.
Nobody knows their friendship
Anjali's mother had also said that she was unaware of who Nidhi was and insisted that her daughter did not have such a friend.
"I don't know Nidhi. I have never seen her. Anjali never used to drink. She never came home in an inebriated state," she said.
On Thursday, Sudesh, Nidhi's mother, also said that she is unaware of her daughter's friendship with Anjali.
