Fifty years of cinema legacy
Cauvery Theatre is shutting down less than six months after it celebrated its 50th anniversary in January.
In 1974 the Cauvery Theatre opened with the screening of Dr Rajkumar¡¯s Bangarada Panjara. The last movie to be screened there was Bade Miyan Chote Miyan in April and since then it had a 'No Show' board hanging outside its gate.

In the fifty years of its existence, the Cauvery Theatre had become the go-to destination for many movie lovers and also many in the industry.

Late actor Puneeth Rajkumar, the son of legendary Kannada actor Rajkumar who used to live in Sadashivnagar was a regular at the Cauvery Theatre.
Social media recall nostalgia
Many on social media shared their nostalgic memories of Cauvery Theatre.
"Cauvery theatre, Sadashivnagar, bites the dust. With this, a part of my childhood is gone forever. Cauvery was our go-to theatre up until Vaibhav came up in 2002. I can¡¯t remember how many Kannada movies I watched here as a kid, in the 90s. Struggling to wrap my head around this," one person wrote.

"Cauvery theatre shutting down seems personal loss to people of Bangalore North. Most of our childhood movies were at Cauvery theatre," said another person.
"It¡¯s unfortunate, another iconic theatre to close down in Bangalore. Cauvery Theatre closed its gates, will be demolished soon to make way for a commercial complex," another social media user wrote.

Why Cauvery Theatre is shutting down
According to Prakash, the son of Narasimhaiah, who founded the Cauvery Theatre, the advent of OTT platforms and the post-COVID dip in viewership made it impossible for them to continue running it.
