The unidentified woman's reference to sunflower seed is not an accident.
Why sunflower?
Ukraine is the world leader when it comes to sunflower oil production.
With the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, there is a fear, including in India that the supply will be disrupted, leading to rising prices.
Sunflower oil vessel loading has already been delayed by at least a week from Ukraine, said Sandeep Bajoria, president of the International Sunflower Oil Association.
Sunflower oil exports from Ukraine could jump to 6.6 million tonnes in the 2021/22 season from 5.3 million tonnes in 2020/21, Ukrainian sunoil producers' union estimates.
In 2021, India imported around 1.89 million tonnes of sunflower oil, 74 per cent of which came from Ukraine.
India's second biggest imported edible oil
Sunflower oil is India's second biggest imported edible oil after palm oil.
The domestic production of sunflower oil accounts for just around 10 per cent of the consumption in India, and the demand for it is only growing.
In the past couple of years, India has tried to look beyond Ukraine to meet its sunflower oil needs, but with the limited production in Argentina, it has remained a challenge.
