Surfing in deep seas is an exhilarating experience, not just due to the unpredictability of the waves, but also the creatures underwater.
And in the most recent instance, a professional surfer had the luckiest escape from a great white shark, all thanks to a drone.
Reported first by The Independent, the surfer who goes by the name of Matt Wilkinson was surfing off the coast of Ballina in northern New South Wales when the drone spotted a massive shark right beneath Wilkinson. The shark was circling Wilkinson ready to attack his feet which were dangling off the surfboard.
The shark which allegedly looked like a great white shark was roughly two and a half metres long. The shark was charging towards Wilkinson before it changed its mind at the very last minute, leaving him completely unharmed.
Wilkinson was completely oblivious to this. Only when the drone came on top of him with the speakers blurting out the shark warning, he decided to come back to the shore. As he returned back to the shores, drone operators from Surf Life Saving showed him the footage which made him realise of his close escape.
Wilkinson said in a statement how the drone and the operator flying it practically saved his life, ¡°The drone came down and told me that there was a dangerous shark in the area, return to the beach. I got to the shore feeling a bit weird and the lifeguards showed me the footage and I realised how close it came without knowing it was there. It looks like it¡¯s going for my leg and it¡¯s changed its mind.¡±
He added, ¡°I¡¯ve been surfing with sharks my whole life and I understand they¡¯re there and know enough about them to know they have not too much interest in humans. I¡¯m just glad today the shark reconsidered at the last second.¡±
