Elon Musk has been working on a bunch of game-changing projects for humans. Apart from his space endeavours, he is also working on Neuralink where he plans to implant a chip in the people¡¯s minds to help them recover from brain injuries that limit their daily motor skills and use AI to make their lives simpler.
However, the project has been far from ready and has constantly been delayed. But Elon¡¯s recent tweet says that Neuralink will showcase an update to the brain-computer interface technology that he claims will be ¡®awesome¡¯.
Last year, Elon revealed how this tiny device -- tiny even on a finger -- could be implanted in a brain using very thin threads. However, Elon supposedly has worked on a better version which is more advanced.
Responding to a tweet by Cathie Wood, a renowned tech investor, Elon Musk said, ¡°The profound impact of high bandwidth, high precision neural interfaces is underappreciated. Neuralink may have this in a human as soon as this year. Just needs to be unequivocally better than Utah Array, which is already in some humans & has severe drawbacks.¡±
He further added, "Wait until you see the next version vs what was presented last year. It's *awesome*."
He also stated that the priority is on making it ¡®super-safe¡¯ and ¡®easy to use¡¯, ¡°First, we need to make it super safe & easy to use, then determine the greatest utility vs risk. From initially working to volume production & implantation is a long road.¡±
He further said in a series of tweets on a thread, ¡°It will ultimately be used to make up for entire lost sections of the brain due to stroke/accident/congenital. Don't want to get too excited, but the potential is truly transformational for restoring brain & motor functions. There is no other way to do it in my opinion.¡±
While he hasn¡¯t really revealed what awesomeness will the Neuralink possess, he wishes to bring these tiny chips to cure human brains sometime in 2020.
But the past has shown us that these timelines cannot be truly relied upon. Elon in July 2019 revealed how Neuralink allowed a monkey to control a computer using his mind and aspired to test it on a human by 2019, but that didn¡¯t really happen.
There is still a long path of certifications and approvals necessary for a human trial.
