IAS Officer Surabhi Gautam: Once Mocked For Her Poor English Now Serving The Nation

Cracking the Civil Service examination is a feat many students attempt year-on-year, but only a few of them manage to clear. In the UPSC examination all candidates have their own different strategies and there are very few such students whose strategy proves to be effective in the very first attempt.

One of them is IAS officer Surabhi Gautam. She guided herself according to her abilities and became an inspiration to thousands of aspirants by becoming an IAS in the very first attempt.

Hailing from a small village in Madhya Pradesh, Surabhi Gautam was a smart scholar from childhood. Since her early schooling days, Surabhi was a topper in her class. In her Class 10 and Class 12 Board exams as well, she scored above 90 percent marks without any external help and limited resources. Her father was a lawyer in the Civil Court and her mother was a teacher.

After completing her schooling, Surabhi appeared for the entrance exam of State Engineering and cracked the exam. She was the first girl of her village to relocate to the city for higher studies. She completed her Engineering in Electronics and Communications from Bhopal, where she topped the university and received a gold medal for her performance.

University topper and gold Medalist Surabhi Gautam had cracked several exams, before appearing for UPSC Civil Services. Surabhi Gautam had worked as a Nuclear Scientist at BARC for a year. She also cleared exams like GATE, ISRO, SAIL, MPPSC PCS, SSC CGL, Delhi Police and FCI. Not only this, she secured AIR 1 in the IES exam held in 2013.

Mocked many times for poor English

However, having good grades throughout her life also could not save her from the flak she faced for her inability to speak fluent English in college. She was mocked many times in class for not speaking English properly. But, still, she did not lose hope and chose to give it back to them with her success.

Surbhi knew that she could secure a better position if she learnt the language enough to get her point across to the other person. So, she started learning 10 new words in English every day.

She worked hard and cracked the IAS exam, the toughest exam in 2016 with AIR 50 and became an IAS officer.

IAS Surabhi Gautam is serving as the Assistant Collector, and is currently posted in district Viramgam of Ahmedabad, as the District Development Officer.
