Woman born with transparent teeth gets life-changing dental surgery
Mihaley Olivia Grace Schlegel, 19, from Oklahoma, US, was born with teeth problems - leaving her with teeth that were almost completely transparent. Her condition was partly due to brittle bone disease.
Schlegel had to face years of taunts and was cruelly called ¡°shark tooth¡±. Her teeth continued to deteriorate and weaken over time, so much so that she stopped ¡°smiling, laughing, and even eating¡± due to the pain.
"From the point, I started getting teeth they were so brittle, they were almost completely see-through," Mihaley told Jam Press.
At one point in time, she struggled to eat properly.
"It got to a point where I struggled to eat basic things like bread at around 15 years old. People would make a nasty face if I were to smile. They¡¯d try to play it off sometimes, but it became more noticeable as I got older," she said.
Despite desperately trying to live through her dental troubles, Mihaley's day-to-day life was hugely impacted by the condition.
"I tried so hard to love my teeth because I knew how expensive it was to get them done. I stopped smiling, laughing, and even eating due to the pain," she explained.

She was suggested to go for dentures at the age of 13, however, it took five years for any orthodontist to consider her complex case.
"Due to me also having brittle bone disease, known as osteogenesis imperfecta, doctors feared breaking my jaw. I've had 117 broken bones, 36 surgeries and multiple placements/replacements for rods in both tibias and femurs. I've had screw replacements in my knees and ankles, small procedures due to my broken back, and multiple bone grafts," she said.
Last December, Mihaley finally underwent the dental procedure that changed her life.
"When I woke up from surgery I just kept laughing and crying because I was so shocked it finally happened," she revealed.
"It was like a dream come true," she added.
