The thief explained that he was struggling to make ends meet and, thus, he decided to flip the laptop and sell it to gain some money. He then added that he looked through the laptop and found that it contained important documents, including a research proposal. Out of a sense of morality, the thief attached the document in the mail and asked the user to let him know if he needed any more documents that he felt were important.
The user shared a screenshot of the mail and wrote, "They stole my laptop last night and they sent me an email using my email, I have mixed emotions now."
The email sent by the thief read, "Bro Howzit, I know I stole your laptop yesterday. I needed the money as I have been struggling to make ends meet. I see that you were busy with a research proposal, I have attached it and if (there) are any other files that you need please alert me before Monday 12.00 since I have found a customer. Once again ngiyacolisa bro."
The subject line reads, "Sorry for the laptop."
Thief's actions garner mixed reactions
The tweet has amassed more than 34,000 retweets and over 2.8 lakh likes. People have had mixed reactions to the thief's actions.
"So you know now, that they were truly in dire need of money without having lost their morals or being "a bad person". Trying to minimise your loss is kind of sweet, I think. Hopefully people realize, what capitalism is doing to us," a user wrote.
