Did You Know India Has Zero Rupee Notes?

The simple thought that comes to our mind when we think of currency notes is to purchase something from that money, right? From low denominations like ? 10,20, 50 or 100 to the higher ones of ? 500 and 2000, these are the commonly used currency notes which we all know. But, have you ever seen or even thought of a Zero rupee note? Yes, you read that right. In fact, India has had Zero rupee notes for more than a decade!

But unlike the RBI who handles the printing of other notes, Zero rupee notes are different and aimed for a special purpose. Eager to know what is it?

The aim of zero rupee note

Well, most of us can't deny the presence of corruption in various forms in our country, especially when it comes to paying bribes. So, instead of handing over your hard-earned money to those taking bribery, wouldn't it be cool to have a rupee note specifically made to troll the corrupt officials?

That's exactly what the zero rupee notes were introduced for. It all dates back to 2007 when an NGO named the Fifth Pillar introduced this note.

The note has contact details of the authorities on the backside, and the motive of the note is to dissuade bribery in any form. So, whenever some official asks for a bribe, citizens are encouraged to 'pay' these zero rupee notes.

This Tamil Nadu-based NGO has actually printed millions of these notes in various languages like ??Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, and its volunteers distribute these notes at public places such as railway stations, bus stations and markets in order to raise awareness about bribery, and share their primary goal of eradicating corruption. There's even a cheeky note within the note that says- If anyone demands a bribe, give this note and report the case.
