Right from the day Elon Musk took over Twitter in late October last year, it's been a chaotic journey.
From mass layoffs, battling the possibility of bankruptcy, failing to fulfil his promises, merging Twitter¡¯s parent firm, and taking u-turns on some decisions, it's been a rollercoaster ride for the CEO, the social networking platform, and, of course, its users.
Quite naturally, many brands, businesses, and individuals have been unhappy with Twitter in recent months, with its CEO, Elon Musk, being on the receiving end of lots of criticism as well.
That¡¯s exactly where many other social media platforms are trying to crop up and take a bigger share of the market.
Curious to know? Read on as we list some of the social networking platforms that are aiming to grow bigger and become everything that Twitter users are using the platform for, or perhaps even better.
Apps Competing With Twitter
1.Bluesky
Though it has not yet launched for everyone, Bluesky can be seen as the closest competitor to Twitter.
Bluesky, created by Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey, launched its beta test a few months ago on the Apple app store. It appears that Bluesky is a lot like Twitter, as TechCrunch reported. It asks "what's up?" instead of "what's happening," with a character limit of 256 characters and a simpler option to add images. Just like Twitter, it allows users to see updates on the home timeline with different feeds for just "posts" and "posts and replies."
Sounds like Twitter, right? It was probably supposed to be that way. Jack Dorsey reportedly first came up with the idea for Bluesky when Twitter banned former US President Donald Trump. Dorsey had said at that time in a tweet that content moderation efforts "can't erode a free and open global internet."
Dorsey also tweeted a few months ago to share his Twitter learnings. He had even taken on the responsibility of growing the company too quickly and apologised for that.
Folks at Twitter past and present are strong and resilient. They will always find a way no matter how difficult the moment. I realize many are angry with me. I own the responsibility for why everyone is in this situation: I grew the company size too quickly. I apologize for that.

2.Plurk
Founded in 2008, Plurk is a social networking and microblogging service that allows users to send updates through short messages or links. You'll find people discussing a broad range of topics, from knitting to Netflix, on it. Plurk reportedly allows anonymous posts, so you can share your thoughts with the world without sharing anything else. A useful Time Machine feature lets you see all of the plurks from days past, making it easy to search for old posts on the platform.
3.Mastodon
Founded in 2016, Mastodon is a relatively different platform due to its decentralised nature. Rather than offering one giant social media platform, it reportedly allows users to create, host, and run communities, or ¡°instances.¡± Each instance has a different set of conduct policies determined by the hosts.
It is free and open-source software for running self-hosted social networking services. While it may seem tedious or complex at first, once you join some communities, you'll find that it can be a great tool for making new, like-minded friends.
4.Tumblr
Founded in 2007 by David Karp, Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website currently owned by the American company Automattic. The platform allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Users can follow other users' blogs. It's widely said that if you see a meme on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, it was probably on Tumblr a month ago. Tumblr reportedly boasts a large community that shares photos, art, writing, and jokes.

5.Hive Social
Founded in 2019, Hive Social is another social platform on this list. The app especially came into the limelight during the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk in October 2022. Hive Social is a mobile-only platform that's trying to recreate Twitter without any of the algorithms. Although it's been around for a few years, it took until late November 2022 for it to explode in popularity.
6.Reddit
One of the most popular and oldest apps on this list is Reddit.
Founded in 2005, Reddit is an American social news aggregation, content rating, and discussion website where registered users submit content to the site, such as links, text posts, images, and videos, which are then voted up or down by other members. It is among the most visited websites in the world.
Reddit is also planning to go public by launching an IPO later this year.
7.Koo
Founded in 2020, Koo is an Indian microblogging social media platform that has been growing and is eyeing global expansion. Koo is a multilingual Indian microblogging platform.
Koo was founded by Mr. Radhakrishna and Mayank Bidawatka to reportedly attract India¡¯s non-English speaking mammoth population.
"Koo is a platform for non-English speakers around the world to express their views in their language, unlike Twitter," Mr. Radhakrishna had said.
In November 2022, Koo had even become the world's second-largest microblogging platform.
