The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Tuesday approved the appointment of former Education and Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare as Advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
An order issued by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Tuesday read, "The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Amit Khare, IAS (Retd.) (JH:1985) as Advisor to the Prime Minister in Prime Minister's Office, in the rank and scale of Secretary to Government of India, on contract basis, as per other usual terms and conditions as arc applicable in the case of re-employed officers of Secretary level in Government of India, initially for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier."
Khare, a 1985 batch (retired) IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, had superannuated on September 30.
He is a BSc (physics) graduate from St Stephens College in Delhi and also holds an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad.
He was instrumental in bringing to light the infamous fodder scam in Bihar when he was working as the deputy commissioner of West Singhbhum (Chaibasa) between 1995-1997.
Khare's last achievement before retirement was to put in shape the National Education Policy 2020, an ambitious programme of the current regime.
He assumed the charge of Secretary, Ministry of Education (Department of Higher Education) in December 2019. Within a short time thereafter, the National Education Policy 2020 was approved by the cabinet on 29 July 2020.
Khare also played a role in formulating the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
