A man who attempted suicide while live broadcasting his act on social media was saved in the nick of time by the Uttar Pradesh police after they were alerted by Meta.
The youth, identified as Abhay Shukla, tried taking his own life, on Tuesday night, after starting a live broadcast on Instagram.
However, this was soon picked up by Meta. After a review of the video, an alert was sent from the parent company of Facebook and Instagram in California to the Uttar Pradesh police.
In March 2022, UP police had tied up with Meta to alert them immediately if a post related to suicide was seen on Facebook or Instagram.
The alert sent to the UP Police included details like Shukla's registered mobile number, based on which it was traced to Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad.
Within 15 minutes, cops reached Shukla's residents and found him in his room.
The 23-year-old was later counselled for 6 hours before being sent back to his family.
According to police, Shukla used to work with Cashify in Gurugram and left his job to start his own business in the same field.
However, the business did not go as he had planned and Shukla suffered major financial losses.
Shukla took the extreme step after he had to borrow Rs 90,000 from his mother, who had saved the amount for his sister's marriage, to compensate for the loss he suffered in his venture, the police said.
On February 1, a similar incident?on another Meta platform, Facebook, could not be prevented.
A 45-year-old businessman from UP's Ballia, who money lenders were allegedly harassing, died after shooting himself while doing a Facebook live.
Nand Lal Gupta, the owner of Ballia Arms Corporation located at Station Malgodam Road, came live on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon and accused some people of harassing him despite returning the loan. Pleading for justice from PM Modi and CM Yogi, he shot himself on the temple with a pistol.
He was rushed to the district hospital for treatment, where the doctors declared him brought dead.
In December, a man from Assam died by suicide while doing a live broadcast on Facebook.
