The ongoing IPL 2024 season has witnessed a surge in ticket prices, with reports highlighting the astonishing costs fans are willing to pay for premium experiences. A standout example is the sale of a premium ticket for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) versus Punjab Kings match in Bengaluru on March 25, reportedly fetching a staggering Rs 52,938.
At the same time,?round trip from Mumbai to Istanbul via IndiGo Airlines was priced at ?48,781.??
According to a report in the Indian Express (IE), IPL ticket prices vary significantly based on factors such as venue, timing, teams, and player brand value. For instance, the M A Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai offers tickets ranging from Rs 1,700 to Rs 6,000, while at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, prices fall between Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000.?
Meanwhile, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, the new home ground of Punjab Kings, tickets are priced from Rs 750 to Rs 9,000.
A PBKS official emphasized the correlation between venue and ticket pricing, stating, "Pricing is decided as per demand and supply, affordability, culture, and the eagerness of the people to pay."
Rajan Manchanda, secretary of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), echoed this sentiment, highlighting the autonomy given to franchises in setting ticket prices at their home venues.
Manchanda noted, "We provide them with the infrastructure and our job is to fulfill their requirements. We don¡¯t engage in the pricing of tickets." He also underscored the influence of cricketers' star power and franchise reputation on ticket prices, stating, "If MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma are playing, the prices would be higher."
Kaso Viswanathan, CEO of CSK, shed light on the challenges faced by franchises in ticket pricing, particularly citing tax implications. "When tickets are being sold in the black market for huge prices, which is of no use to us, we have to adjust it accordingly," Viswanathan explained. "Moreover, for each ticket, we pay 58 per cent tax (28 per cent GST and 25 per cent entertainment tax). So, the returns are minimal for us."
The dynamic nature of ticket pricing in the IPL reflects the complex interplay of demand, supply, taxation, and fan enthusiasm, underscoring the evolving landscape of cricket as both a sport and a commercial spectacle.
