Another Indian has made the country proud! Gita Sabharwal has added to the country's glory after being appointed as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Indonesia.?She has bagged this honour, which is the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System at the country level, after close to 30 years of experience.
Armed with a master's degree in development management from the University of Wales in the UK, Sabharwal has been a vocal champion of climate change, sustainable peace, governance and social policy.?
She is also no stranger when it comes to using digital technology and has been using data to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to a statement from the UN.
Previously, Sabharwal worked as the UN resident coordinator in Thailand and as a peacebuilding and development adviser for the UN in Sri Lanka.?
Before joining the UN, she served as the deputy country representative for The Asia Foundation in the Maldives and Sri Lanka. She also held roles as a poverty and policy adviser for the Department for International Development in India and Vietnam, among other positions.
Sabharwal expressed in a post on X, "Just landed in Jakarta! Very honoured as I look forward to serve, as @UN Resident Coordinator (designate), the govt and people of #Indonesia through @UNinIndonesia, together with 26 UN agencies in one of the region's largest economies, in support of #SDGs."
Resident Coordinators head UN Country Teams and organise UN assistance for countries in carrying out the 2030 Agenda.?
The Resident Coordinator serves as the official representative of the UN Secretary-General and reports to them.
Key responsibilities include representing the UN at the highest levels of state and leading the UN country team (UNCT) in consultations with the host government.
