A couple from New Zealand have broken up and gotten into a court battle after a woman missed out on attending a concert she had planned to attend. The woman blamed her ex-boyfriend for her missing the flight and sued him. According to the unnamed woman, her boyfriend at the time was supposed to drive her to the airport, but he failed to do so.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that the man, with whom she had been in a relationship for six years, had agreed verbally to pick her up and drive her to the airport. But he failed to do so, resulting in the woman missing her flight. According to her, she had to arrange another pick-up for the following day.

She further alleged that her boyfriend had also agreed to stay at her house while she was away and look after her dogs, which he also did not do. Following this, the woman had to incur an additional cost to put her dogs into a kennel.
The woman said she ended up paying for the fare and claimed the man would reimburse her. Arguing that the verbal agreement between her and her boyfriend was legally binding, she took her boyfriend to the Disputes Tribunal, demanding that she be compensated for her losses.
However, the Tribunal held that while a promise was made, it fell short of being a contract, with the promises exchanged as a normal give and take in a relationship. ¡°Partners, friends, and colleagues make social arrangements, but it is unlikely they can be legally enforced unless the parties perform some act that demonstrates an intention that they will be bound by their promises.¡±
