Getting a new mobile connection just got simpler in India. Now, you can order a brand new sim card online through the new self-KYC offering.?
The Department of Telecommunications (DOT) released the new guidelines on September 21 which allow customers to avoid going to stores for verification purposes while buying a new mobile connection.?
Keeping safety of customers in mind during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the government has introduced self-KYC which allows customers to verify their identity using the mobile application or respective portals of mobile carriers.
Once you apply for the SIM card online, you would be required to verify your identity using UIDAI's self-authentication through DigiLocker authentication wherein your identification details are fed to the system and verified in minutes.?
Even though all valid identification documents like voter ID card, passport and pan may be used to avail the services, your Aadhar card is the most convenient way to verify your identity using the DigiLocker.?

The paperless approach eradicates a series of cumbersome processes. In fact, all the details are fetched automatically through your Aadhaar details once you verify your identity, including your photo. But the user will have to click a live photo while applying to match the one on your ID card.?
For every authentication or self-KYC that takes place online, Telecom Service Providers (TSP) like Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio will be charged ?1 for each customer.?
In the release, the Ministry of Communications added that the testing and verification undertaken by government agencies for handing out new mobile connections will no longer be required.?
Even then, service providers and carriers are required to ensure compliance in terms of documentation and eligibility while issuing new connections.All action taken by service providers will be reported to the telecommunications department.?
