It's only day 3, but somehow it feels like forever, only in terms of how conscious and informed my actions have become owing to the challenge. I have never felt so purposive of what I am buying, what I am throwing, where I am throwing etc.?
I mean, we never really do that, do we??
Anyhow, the past three days have strengthened my belief even further as to how we need to cut our dependence on plastic. We contribute to estimated 12m tonnes entering our oceans, polluting marine life, on yearly basis. The changes have to come in small things like avoiding using plastic bottles, absolutely withdrawing from using straws, plastic plates and cups etc.?
Supported by the food industry, the global demand for plastic cutlery has only increased over the years and it is all because of our convenience. That said, there isn't just one, but multiple options for us to fall back on when we are fighting plastic. I am just going to cite a couple of them here so you can follow them too.?
1. Carry your own bottle wherever you go and do not buy plastic water bottles.?
2. Do not use plastic bags and bring your own reusable bags when out for shopping.
3. Use non-plastic containers for storing food at home and while bringing lunch to your office/workplace/travelling.
4. Carry your spoon & straw with you - it's lightweight, hygienic and safe for the environment.?
5. Avoid overpackaged convenience foods.
6. Start from your house - look around your space and see what plastic can you replace.
You have to find what works for you from a plethora of options that are available in the market. Simple things like when you buy a book online, they wrap it in a huge plastic sheet and then send it to you. You can politely ask them to avoid plastic wrap while delivering your order and this can be applied in a variety of things that one buys online and offline.?
Furthermore, you can also replace your plastic dustbin, plastic vases, plastic plant pots and make space for ceramic bowls, ceramic/mud/ steel dustbin and ceramic pots. From stainless steel, bamboo or glass, to bottles - the options are endless, just make the change.?
