The suspenseful trailer for "Curry and Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case" has viewers glued to their screens. This documentary explores the notorious Koodathayi Cyanide Case. As we await its release, it is imperative that we delve deep into this horrifying episode, which transpired from 2002 to 2016, in which apparently a woman masterminded carries out well-thought-out killings.
Who Is Jolly Joseph?
Jolly Joseph¡ªbetter known as Jollyamma¡ªseemed like your average 47-year-old mother of two children. Her 1997 marriage to Roy Thomas, a well-known local couple's son, seems to have cemented her status in the town.
She took an active role in her neighbors' lives and frequently helped those in need. But it turned out that her supposed position as a professor at NIT Calicut was a lie meant to get her recognition.
The Mysterious Deaths
Jolly's mother-in-law Anamma passed away in 2002, and because of her pre-existing illness, her death was not investigated, setting off a string of unexplained fatalities. The deaths of Roy Thomas's father, Tom Thomas, and himself occurred in 2008 and 2011. Jolly was able to persuade the locals that these deaths were due to natural causes, which prevented any in-depth inquiries.
The startling discovery that cyanide poisoning was the cause of death was made during Roy Thomas's 2011 post-mortem examination. In spite of this, the authorities declared it a suicide, allowing Jolly to carry on with her murderous rampage.
Rojo and Renji Thomas, started to have doubts about the succession of fatalities, which was a turning point. Their concerns led to an inquiry that started in August 2019 and exposed Jolly Joseph's painstakingly constructed deceit.
The Confession
Jolly Joseph eventually admitted to her horrible deeds. She killed six family members in a vicious attempt to obtain family wealth, and she eventually married Roy's cousin Shaju Sakhariya.
Many inconsistencies were discovered by the authorities in her testimonies and other evidence, according to a CNN story. She had been deceiving her friends and family for more than 14 years, which increased the likelihood of the greater misconduct.
The Arrest
On October 4, 2019, after a thorough investigation that revealed the truth through the exhumation of graves, Jolly Joseph was arrested. Jolly's relative M.S. Mathew, who provided her with the cyanide, and the goldsmith Prajikumar, who provided cyanide to Mathew, were both arrested later.
The case is still pending, and the verdict has not yet been announced yet. Jolly Joseph is being held at the district prison in Kozhikode.
Curry and Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case is to release on Netflix on December 22.
