The hospital director has sounded an alarm, describing the conditions as "catastrophic," exacerbated by ongoing Israeli military actions in the surrounding areas and the depletion of fuel reserves, rendering the facility unable to operate effectively.
In a race against the odds, Al-Shifa hospital staff find themselves grappling with the challenge of sustaining the lives of newborns as oxygen supplies dwindle.
The dire situation has forced them to manually relocate infants from the neonatal unit's incubators to another section of the hospital.
Amidst this turmoil, a journalist from the Al Arabiya network, present on-site, revealed that individuals within the hospital are trapped, paralyzed by fear, and unable to escape due to the intense and ongoing conflict.
¡°There is no more water, food, milk for children and babies¡ the situation in the hospital is catastrophic,¡± Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, the medical center's director, revealed this information to CNN on Monday.
The visual representations depict a group of recently born infants removed from their respective incubators within the medical facility and placed together on a single bed.
According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, there have been reports of 15 fatalities at Al-Shifa, including six infants, as a result of power outages and a shortage of medical facilities.
These statistics are sourced from the Hamas-administered region.
It comes amid Israel's persistent bombing and siege of Gaza, an already poor and heavily populated state, in the aftermath of a deadly October 7 attack on its territory by Hamas militants.
Dr. Medhat Abbas, director general of Gaza's health ministry, told CNN that medical workers at Al-Shifa saved four infants alive after their mothers died by conducting C-sections.
¡°Now they have to make it without their mothers and electricity¡ Can you imagine that?¡± he said in a voice note.
¡°When these babies are born prematurely, they must have the same temperature as their mother to sustain their lives. This temperature can only be offered in the incubators, which are heated properly,¡± Abbas said.
He said the situation will get worse in winter.
The Israeli military spokesperson told CNN on Saturday that their forces are in intense fighting with Hamas near the hospital complex. They denied shooting at the northern Gaza medical center and dismissed claims that the hospital is under siege.
