Aamir Khan¡¯s directorial debut Taare Zameen Par went on to receive both critical and box-office acclaim. The level of appreciation that it saw made it reach to Oscars that year. But strangely, the film that featured Aamir in the role of art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh wasn¡¯t meant for him. Film writer and filmmaker Amole Gupte wanted the 90s star Akshaye Khanna in the character¡¯s shoes.
However, Aamir insisted on narration for himself before he tells Akshaye about it. ¡°Aamir being Aamir, told him I cannot recommend a script unless I hear it first. So make me hear it, if I will like it, I will tell Akshaye,¡± the Dil Chahta Hai narrated to Mid-Day. ¡°But he (Aamir) liked it so much, that he did it,¡± Akshaye added.
He recalled Aamir meeting him and telling him about what he has done, but the latter told him, ¡°It¡¯s ok. No problem.¡± Akshaye also believed that Aamir did greater justice to the film. He added, ¡°I don¡¯t think I could have done a better job than Aamir. He was superb. So it was good that destiny kind of took him.¡± Check out a snippet from the video:
