A police case has been filed against the Meridian School authorities in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, after a student there suffered a near-fatal electrocution.
The incident that took place on June 23 only came to light after the family of the injured student approached the police accusing the school authorities of negligence.
According to local media reports, sixteen-year-old Hassan Khan, a Class XI student, suffered electrocution from an unfenced, high-voltage transformer located near a construction site on school grounds.
Hasan was playing with his friends on the first day of school reopening when he accidentally came into contact with an iron rod connected to the unfenced transformer.
"There was some construction going on in front of the lunch hall. That's where the 1,400-volt transformer was. The area was not fenced and did not have any signs. He was there during the lunch break when he was electrocuted," the father of Hasan alleged.
According to him, Hassan's friends raised an alarm when they did not find him at lunchtime.
It later transpired that a painter had seen Hassan Khan collapse after getting electrocuted. He rushed with the student to the school management.
The father further alleged that the school authorities initially tried to mislead them and prevent them from filing an FIR.
Only after the school authorities allegedly washed their hands off the incident, claiming that it was not their fault, the father filed a police complaint.?
Banjara Hills sub-inspector Praveen Reddy said that he had inspected the transformer and found it unfenced and that there were no caution boards.?
"No one was there to monitor or warn the kids," he said and added that police were investigating why Hassan had landed up near the transformer," he said.
Meanwhile, Hasan, who suffered over 50 per cent burns on his body, is undergoing treatment in a hospital.
He has undergone multiple surgical procedures, including two skin graft surgeries so far.
