Two women have filed a police complaint alleging that a family assaulted them in a Ghaziabad society after an argument over their pet dog running off the leash.
The incident reportedly happened at the Wave Executive Floors in Ghaziabad on June 26.
The complainant, Natasha Satija, said she had recently relocated to the Wave Executive Floors along with her sister and their two pet dogs.
On June 26, while the sisters were on their way to their father's house in Shastri Nagar, one of the dogs escaped from its leash and ran away.
As Satija ran after the dog, a family in the lobby confronted her and told her that the pet should be leashed.
According to Satija, her dog ran away in panic as it had not gotten used to the new surroundings, and she apologised for what had just happened.
But, she alleged that the family was not in the mood to listen. In her complaint, Satija alleged that the husband and wife insulted and physically attacked her.
Satija further alleged that the husband kicked the other dog, and when her sister tried to intervene, she was also attacked.
The sisters later approached the Wave City Police Station and filed a complaint against the husband and wife.
According to ACP (Wave City) Ravi Prakash Singh, the couple has been booked under IPC sections 323 (assault), 504 (intentional assault), and 506 (criminal intimidation) and an investigation is ongoing.
Conflicts between dog owners and others who don't share their passion for pets are not uncommon in residential societies.
Many Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Apartment Owner Associations (AOAs) have banned pets or imposed restrictions on dogs in lifts and common areas like gardens, parks, etc.
In 2022, after a series of dog attacks, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) announced a ban on three foreign dog breeds - Pit Bull, Rottweiler and Dogo Argentino as pets.
In neighbouring Noida, the rules are even stricter, and there is a penalty of ?10,000 on owners if their pet dog or cat attacks anyone. In addition, they are also liable to pay for all the medical expenses for the treatment of the injury caused by their pet.
Noida has also made the registration of pets mandatory, and owners who fail to do so will have to pay a fine of ?10,000.
