A massive manhunt has been launched in Kerala for Abigel Sarah Regi, a 6-year-old girl who was abducted by a suspected group of four in a car on Monday.
Abigel was walking home at Oyoor near Kollam with her eight-year-old brother after tuition when a white car stopped beside them. The men got down, pushed the boy, and sped away with the girl.?
Abigel's brother Jonathan, who tried to save his sister, suffered injuries to his knees after the kidnappers pushed him down.
Based on the family's complaint, the Kollam Police registered a complaint, and as the news of the shocking daylight abduction spread, locals and thousands of social media users joined the search for Abigel.
CCTV visuals from the spot have captured the details of the vehicle used for the crime, but according to the police, the while Swift Dzire car could have been rented by the abductors.
In the evening, nearly four hours after Abigel went missing, her mother, Siji, received a call from the suspected abductors, demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh for her release.
"A man spoke first, saying that the girl is safe. They demanded Rs 5 lakhs as ransom money for the release of the girl," the police said.
Later, a woman called the mother again at night, raising the ransom money to Rs 10 lakh, and said it should be paid by Tuesday morning.
The kidnappers had also warned the parents not to inform the police.
Based on eyewitness records, the Kerala Police released a sketch of one of the suspects.
Though Abigel has been untraceable since Monday, the police have expressed confidence that the abductors have not been able to leave the Kollam district.
But police have also expanded their search to neighbouring Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts for any suspicious vehicles.?
Top police official IG of Police Spurgen Kumar, who is leading the probe, said multiple teams are doing their job and have managed to get some information.
