PM Modi's 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' fostered competition between cities to become the top-ranked 'cleanest city', and has now become a driving force for 'healthy competition among cities vying for urban planning'.??
Swachh Survekshan was introduced by the government to encourage citizen participation in the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The government recently announced the results of the annual survey of cleanliness - Swachh Survekshan 2020 - and Indore once again retained the top spot as the cleanest city of India.
Daily sweeping of roads and streets ensuring zero spread of solid waste; an effective drainage system coupled with water harvesting of rainfall run-off; total recycling of treated sewage preferably for irrigation and efficient solid waste management system - Indore fulfills all these essential parameters to get the cleanest city crown.?

The city earned the badge for the fourth consecutive time.
Talking to news agency PTI, Indore Municipal Corporation Commissioner Pratibha Pal said on Wednesday, ¡°We are confident that with the help of our hard-working sanitary workers, aware citizens and public representatives of Indore, we will secure first place in the cleanliness survey for the fourth consecutive time and our slogan of hitting a four in terms of cleanliness will turn out to be true.¡±?

Gujarat¡¯s Surat bagged the second spot, Maharashtra¡¯s Navi Mumbai ranked third, and Varanasi was the adjudged the ¡®best Ganga town¡¯ in the central government¡¯s cleanliness survey.
¡°Congratulations to the people of Indore for achieving the first position in being India¡¯s cleanest city in Swachh Survekshan 2020. The city has hit a four this time and surely will hit a six in the coming future,¡± Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, said.
This is the fifth edition of the survey that was introduced by Prime Minister?Narendra Modi?in January 2016. In the first edition of the survey, Mysuru had won the award for the cleanest city of India.??
The survey ranked 4,242 cities, 62 cantonment boards and 92 Ganga towns, which account for a population of approximately 1.87 crore people in the country.? ?
A total of 1.9 crore citizens across 4,242 cities of the country participated in the survey held by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
